Abbott President to Retire

Abbott Laboratories announced Aug. 3 that Richard Gonzalez, president, chief operating officer and member of the board, plans to retire after a 30-year career with the company.

Miles White, chairman and CEO of Abbott said Gonzalez will remain with Abbott until Sept. 30, at which point the heads of Abbott’s operating businesses — including medical devices, pharmaceuticals and diagnostics — will report directly to Miles White, chairman and CEO of Abbott.

Last month the company announced financial results for the second quarter. U.S. pharmaceutical sales increased 27 percent, driven by strong double-digit growth in Humira (adalimumab), Depakote (divalproex sodium), TriCor (fenofibrate) and Kaletra (lopinavir/nitonavir) sales. Humira sales increased 44 percent in the U.S. and 58 percent internationally.
