August 20, 2007

According to Relief Web, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs’ news service, the government of Japan donated $1 million to UNICEF for the prevention of infectious diseases among children in Ethiopia.

The funds will be used to fight malaria, which is prevalent in over 75 percent of Ethiopia, putting over 50 million people at risk, UNICEF said.

The campaign will provide mass antimalaria treatments using the antimalaria drug coartem, the agency added.

UNICEF said that an estimated 344,000 children will die of preventable diseases, including malaria, this year.
