Start-up devicemakers should take advantage of partners and other opportunities to meet their manufacturing needs rather than trying to do everything themselves. “It would be too capital intensive to do in-house manufacturing,” Jeffrey Roberts, president and CEO of NovaLign Orthopaedics, said. His company, which recently received FDA 510(k) clearance for its first product, got its start in a device incubator. Another option is a joint venture, which allows for more diversified products and may give start-ups additional access to capabilities such as tooling, manufacturing and employee labor, Tom Taylor, president of diagnostic maker Roush Life Sciences, said.
