Doctor Pleads Guilty to Accepting Bribes Through Insys’ Fraudulent Speakers Bureau

A Florida doctor is the latest to plead guilty in connection with an Insys scheme to pay kickbacks in exchange for prescribing its opioid drug Subsys.
Michael Frey of Fort Myers pleaded guilty on Monday to two counts of conspiracy to receive healthcare kickbacks. Frey agreed to a civil settlement of $2.8 million for False Claims Act violations.
In the plea agreement, Frey admitted to receiving payments from Insys’ fraudulent speakers bureau, in which the company disguised kickbacks as speaking fees, for prescribing its fentanyl sublingual spray Subsys.
