Drug Theft, Anti-Counterfeiting Legislation Surges Through Senate
Over the course of three days in March, the Senate took two actions
aimed at strengthening the pharmaceutical supply chain: The Judiciary
Committee approved a bill that increases penalties for stealing
prescription drugs, and the full Senate passed a bill that would boost
possible prison time and penalties for those convicted of manufacturing,
selling or trafficking counterfeit drugs. The SAFE Doses Act, or
Strengthening and Focusing Enforcement to Deter Organized Stealing and
Enhance Safety (S. 1002), increases the sentences for those who
transport stolen drugs, alter labels of expired medical products and
knowingly obtain stolen drugs and resell them into the supply chain.
