Boehringer Wins Third Bellwether Suit Over its Blood Thinner
A Hartford Superior Court jury found Boehringer Ingelheim not liable for the severe internal bleeding a Pensacola, Florida, man suffered after using the company’s blood thinner Pradaxa.
The Oct. 5 verdict marked the third Connecticut lawsuit this year in which a jury found BI wasn’t liable for injuries or death allegedly caused by the blockbuster drug. The company settled approximately 4,000 U.S. state and federal Pradaxa claims for $650 million in 2014.
Plaintiff William Bedsole alleged that the drugmaker didn’t sufficiently warn physicians about the drug’s potential risks — including an increased danger of gastrointestinal bleeding — and the lack of an agent to reverse the drug’s anticoagulant effects.
