WHO Calls for Gene Editing Registry

A panel of WHO experts has called for the creation of a gene editing registry and what the agency called “a strong international governance framework” on the emerging technology.
The WHO advisory committee was called together late last year after a Chinese scientist reported that he had used gene editing technology on a pair of twins.
The experts on the panel met for two days before urging the WHO to create an international registry and to continue work on ethical and scientific guidance.
“Gene editing holds incredible promise for health, but it also poses some risks, both ethically and medically,” said WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
