Progressive groups organized a series of rallies across the country last week as part of a “People Over Pharma Profits” day of action. The coalition — dubbed “Lower Drug Prices Now” — includes Public Citizen, Health Care for America Now, Families USA, and MoveOn.
The day of action marked the first event for the new coalition, which was launched earlier this month. The events asked attendees and supporters to contact their members of Congress to demand legislative action to address drug costs.
In a “principles” document, the coalition highlighted demands to “rein in” drugmakers’ price-setting abilities and noted the “substantial amount” of taxpayer money that supports drug innovation.
As part of the day of action, the progressive group Data for Progress released the results of a poll that showed 84 percent of voters support allowing the government to negotiate lower drug prices.
