Accuracy of Computer-Aided Mammogram Interpretation 'Unclear'
A study in the New England Journal of Medicine says computer-aided detection at mammography facilities identifies suspicious findings, "but its effect on the accuracy of interpretation is unclear."
The study found that the change in cancer-detection rate with computer assistance was not significant, and the use of computer-aided detection was associated with significantly lower overall accuracy than nonuse.
"The increased rate of biopsy with the use of computer-aided detection is not clearly associated with the improved detection of invasive breast cancer," researchers said.
Detection programs analyze digitized mammograms and identify suspicious areas for review by the radiologist.
